About Us

Built by two mates
from the Northern Rivers.

Rowan and Oscar have been friends since they were five. Growing up in the Northern Rivers, they spent most of their childhood exploring local creeks, bush and ocean, which probably explains a lot about where they ended up.

Over the years that turned into a genuine obsession with the outdoors. Camping, hiking, surfing, a bit of bouldering, and most recently their first full snow season in Japan. Every time they got into something new, two things stood out. The upfront cost was steep, and there was nowhere purpose built to buy or sell secondhand gear for that sport.

Most of their first hiking setup came from Facebook Marketplace and op shops. Both worked, eventually, but took serious time and digging. They still made plenty of mistakes. The first sleeping mat Rowan bought was about triple the pack-down size he expected and weighed more than double what he carries now. If the specs had been listed properly and he could have filtered by hiking versus car camping, he probably would have made a better call. They wrote a guide on where to sell outdoor gear in Australia if you want to compare the options yourself.

That frustration is where SummitSwap came from. A dedicated peer to peer marketplace for outdoor gear, built by people who actually use the stuff.

The idea is straightforward. Lots of people have gear sitting in the garage from a sport they tried once. Lots of other people want to get into that sport without spending a fortune on new kit. Getting those two groups together is good for both of them and good for the gear, which in most cases has years of life left in it.

There is an environmental angle to this too. Take Gore-Tex, which has faced scrutiny for its use of forever chemicals. A jacket that gets used properly and passed on when the owner is done with it has a fraction of the footprint of one that gets replaced every few seasons. Keeping gear in circulation longer is one of the more practical things you can do for the environments we all go out to enjoy.
