Prohibited Items

Last updated: 6 May 2026

SummitSwap is a marketplace for second-hand outdoor gear. To keep our community safe, certain categories of items cannot be listed or sold on our platform.

Why we prohibit safety-critical gear:Many items — helmets, ropes, harnesses, avalanche beacons — have a finite service life and can degrade in ways that are invisible to the naked eye. A used helmet may look perfect but provide no protection after an impact. Second-hand safety gear cannot be reliably verified, and we won't put buyers at risk.

Prohibited Categories

The following items cannot be listed on SummitSwap under any circumstances:

Listings for prohibited items will be removed without notice. Repeated violations may result in account suspension. If you are unsure whether your item qualifies, contact us before listing.

Why These Categories?

Helmetsare designed to absorb a single significant impact. After that impact — even one that isn't visible externally — the foam liner is permanently deformed and the helmet no longer provides rated protection. The same logic applies to climbing helmets and bike helmets alike.

Climbing ropes, harnesses, and fall-arrest equipment have mandatory retirement dates and are subject to degradation from UV exposure, chemical contact, and load cycles. A rope or harness that looks fine may be dangerously weakened. Only a trained inspector can reliably assess these items — and even then, it cannot be fully verified.

Avalanche safety gear (beacons, transceivers, avalanche airbags) must function perfectly in an emergency. Battery contacts corrode, transmitter frequencies drift, and airbag canisters may have been deployed or partially depleted. In an avalanche scenario, a malfunctioning device is worse than no device because it creates a false sense of security.

Life jackets and PFDs degrade with UV and salt exposure. The foam buoyancy material compresses and loses lift over time. A PFD that fails in the water cannot be relied upon to keep someone afloat.

Gas canisters and cartridges can develop microscopic leaks at valve seals, particularly after partial use. They pose a fire and explosion risk if improperly stored or transported.

Recalled products have been identified by manufacturers or regulators as unsafe. Selling or purchasing a recalled product is potentially illegal and dangerous.

What You Can Sell

Almost everything else in the outdoor gear world is welcome on SummitSwap — packs, tents, sleeping bags, technical clothing, ski boots, bindings, kayaks, surfboards, navigation tools, hydration gear, and much more.

If you're unsure whether a specific item falls under a prohibited category, contact us before listing — we'd rather help you list it correctly than remove it after the fact.

Incorrect Flagging

Our system may occasionally flag listings that don't actually violate this policy. If you believe your item has been incorrectly flagged or removed, contact support@summitswap.com.au and we'll review it promptly.
